SPF Explained: What to Look For, What It Really Means & How to Choose the Right One for Your Skin

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and there’s no better time to really understand your SPF — because it’s not just about wearing one, it’s about choosing the right level of protection for your skin.

Why SPF 50 Is Better Than SPF 30

A lot of people assume SPF 30 is “good enough” — and while it does offer protection, the difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is more important than most people realise.

📊 The Real Difference:

  • SPF 30 blocks ~97% of UVB rays

  • SPF 50 blocks ~98–99% of UVB rays

That might sound like a small difference — but in reality:

👉 SPF 30 allows around 3% of UVB through

👉 SPF 50 allows only 1–2% through

That means:

  • SPF 30 lets through up to 50% more UV radiation than SPF 50

  • Over time, that additional exposure adds up significantly

💡 Why This Matters:

  • UV damage is cumulative (it builds up daily)

  • Even small amounts of extra exposure can contribute to:

    • Premature ageing

    • Pigmentation

    • Skin sensitivity

    • Long-term skin damage

👉 This is why I always recommend SPF 50 for daily use, especially if you’re investing in your skin or having treatments.

It’s Not Just UV: Understanding Visible Light, Infrared & Blue Light

Most people think SPF is only about UV — but your skin is exposed to more than just sunlight.

☀️ UV Radiation (UVA + UVB)

  • Comes from the sun

  • Present all year round

  • Penetrates clouds and glass

🌈 Visible Light (Including Blue Light)

  • Found in sunlight

  • Also emitted from phones, laptops, tablets, and LED lighting

  • Plays a role in pigmentation, especially in darker skin tones

👉 Blue light is part of visible light and is increasingly relevant due to modern lifestyles.

🔥 Infrared Radiation

  • Comes from the sun and heat sources

  • Penetrates deeper into the skin

  • Linked to collagen breakdown and premature ageing

💡 Why This Matters:

Traditional SPFs mainly protect against UVB (burning) and sometimes UVA — but advanced formulas like Heliocare go further, helping to protect against:

✔ UVA

✔ UVB

✔ Visible light (including blue light)

✔ Infrared radiation

👉 This is where modern SPF really stands out.

Heliocare for Your Skin

🧴 Chemical vs Mineral SPF – What’s the Difference?

This is one of the most common questions I get in clinic.

🌿 Chemical SPF (Organic Filters)

  • Works by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat

  • Usually lightweight and invisible on the skin

  • Great under makeup

  • Ideal for most skin types

🪨 Mineral SPF (Physical Filters)

  • Sits on the surface and reflects UV rays away from the skin

  • Often contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide

  • Can sometimes leave a slight white cast

  • Often recommended for very sensitive or reactive skin

👉 The truth? It’s not about one being “better” — it’s about what works best for your skin type and lifestyle.

🌿 Why I Recommend Heliocare

When it comes to SPF, not all products are created equal — and this is why I recommend Heliocare to my clients.

What makes it stand out:

Fernblock® Technology – a powerful antioxidant derived from a tropical fern that helps protect the skin from within, reducing oxidative stress caused by UV exposure

Broad-spectrum protection – shields against UVA, UVB, visible light, and infrared radiation

Supports skin health – helps prevent premature ageing, pigmentation, and sun-induced damage

Lightweight, wearable formulas – suitable for all skin types, including oily, sensitive, and acne-prone skin

Advanced formulations – many options also help with redness, pigmentation, and hydration alongside protection

It’s not just about blocking the sun, it’s about actively supporting your skin’s long-term health.
